The Printmakers of North Carolina are pleased to announce Big
Impressions: NC Prints. A state wide competition seeking challenging and inventive new and large work from artists throughout the state for an exciting exhibition. The work can include both traditional and non-traditional approaches to all hand-pulled printmaking processes.

Juror: Adam Cave
Adam Cave has earned degrees in both Fine Art and Art History from Connecticut College. His art career began in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1992. He has been the director of Gallery C in Raleigh for over ten years before opening Adam Cave Fine Art, located at 115 Hargett Street in Raleigh. He has served on the Town of Cary Public Art Advisory Board and has lectured for The Visual Art Exchange and The Fine Arts League of Cary. Most recently Adam was asked to be a juror for Artspace in Raleigh and, in 2008, he will serve as art chair for the Alliance of Aids Services - Carolinas "Works of Heart" auction, the largest art auction and fund-raiser in the Triangle.

Timeline
May 1, 2009 (deadline for materials): Submissions, fee, entry form, and one appropriately-sized self-addressed stamped envelope if return of submission materials is desired.
May 15, 2009: Notifications e-mailed.
May 23, 2009: Work to arrive at The Town Hall
May 31, 2009: Exhibition opening.

Eligibility
Big Impressions: NC Prints is open to all North Carolina artists. Entrants may enter 3 works in digital format. All work must have been created in the last two years.

Entry Fee
A $35 non-refundable entry fee per entry for non PoNC members. ($25 for PoNC members) (Check, money order, or cash accepted). Make checks payable to The Printmakers of North Carolina.

Delivery and Return of Work
Selected artists are responsible for delivery of work to the Town Hall in Cary at 316 North Academy Street on Saturday, May 23 between the hours of 11am and 4pm. Work may also be shipped in reusable containers with prepaid return shipping. All work must arrive ready to install. If the work is not gallery-ready, or does not exhibit good craftsmanship, it will be omitted from the exhibition. Accepted work that differs significantly from the entry images or suffers from poor presentation, will be disqualified. Accepted work will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition. All work must be prepared for mailing or picked up by July 25, 2009.

Sale of Work
All work will be available for sale during the exhibit. The Printmakers of North Carolina (PoNC) will retain a commission of 20% of the listed sale price on all artwork sold during the exhibition.

Digital Images
Submit up to three works, digital works only on readable CD containing images saved in jpeg format, 300 dpi, approximately 5 inches x 7 inches. Label each image with the title of work. Also include your check list with your name, title, medium, dimensions (hxw), date, and artists statement. Label the CD with first and last name of the artist. CDs of accepted work will be retained for educational purposes. Rejected CDs will be returned only if an appropriately-sized self addressed stamped envelope is enclosed. If your work is selected, it may be used in publicity materials, included on The PoNC website, in e-newsletters or in other material.
You will always be given credit for your work.

The proofing charge covers services of professional help, cost of normal materials, and proofing up to a maximum of 8 proofs.

Impression Charge: based on size and number of glass plates (one plate for each color).

Littleton Studios retains:

The total price of an edition is the proofing charge times days to achieve the BAT plus the impression charge times the number of prints. For example: 20 impressions (edition plus proofs) from one plate, size 12” x 16” that takes two days to resolve the BAT would be $1,000.00.

Proofing charge: $250/day x 2 days = $ 500

Impression charge: $25/impression x 20 prints = $ 500

The fee does NOT include impressions retained by the studio or impressions rejected due to technical fault: miss registration, smeared or blotted color -These prints will be destroyed.

packing and Shipment of prints

Pricing of the entire project will change with:

length of stay, number of runs, size of edition, & size of plates
additional fees will be added for split plate inking, á la poupeé inking, special wiping.

Please note:

Proofing charges will be due at the end of the artist’s visit.

Edition charges will be due one month following delivery of impressions to artist for signing.

All charges will be payable to Littleton Company, Inc.

I cooked these up for some friends' team. I carved the numbers, badge, and sponsor logo out of linoleum and use a scrap piece of hardboard for the diagonal stripe. I had always wanted to print jerseys for a whole team. It took a while with the front and back.

"Rock On" :Mezzotint Workshop II

If you have interest in learning more about the process and beautiful results of this acid-free intaglio technique, sign up! Entitled "Rock On", this workshop will be led by professional printmaker Julie Niskanen--specializing in Mezzotint and other intaglio processes. Julie, whose award-winning work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, brings not only extensive knowledge of the process to this workshop, but also custom-made tools to aid in the creation of mezzotints. For those possessing prior experience with the technique, you will be pleasantly surprised at the relative ease Julie's methods provide in both plate preparation and image rendition.

The workshop will be held September 16, 18, 23, & 25 at the Print Shop at 311 W Martin Street Galleries & Studios.

Flanders Art Gallery will host artists Andy Farkas, Jeannine Cook, and Gina Fuentes Walker for Float, an exhibit looking at the delicacy and detail contained within nature's flora.

As Farkas debuts his new book River, he will include individual pulled prints that were produced to illustrate the new text. Farkas's works, notably his past wood engravings, are characterized by fine lines and are populated by animals and children attempting to make sense of their physical and psychological environments. He will also provide an explanatory installation of printmaking processes within the exhibit.

Selected from her Seasons on Sapelo series, Cook's pieces will showcase her silverpoint studies of the changing scenery on a barrier island in Georgia. Silverpoint is a medium that dates to the twelfth century, and it entails wielding a silver stylus over a prepared surface to produce the resulting image.

Walker offers transparency photographs that become sculptural endeavors as she presents translucent images of branches and ferns mounted between layers of glass.

Our fearless leader Bill Fick is the proud curator of a brand new show called: Printed: Contemporary Prints and Books by North Carolina Artists. You can see it at the Green Hill Center for Art in Greensboro, NC from Jan 18th to Feb 29th.

We were happy to make the three hour drive to attend the opening, which was VERY well attended! The show looked great, and it was good to see old friends again.

Prospectus for Entry – "The Illustrated Word"
April 4 – May 1, 2008

Art gallery Flanders 311 wishes to pair local writers with the Printmakers of North Carolina (PoNC) for an illustration exhibition to be held April 4 – May 1, 2008. In order to execute this exhibition, invited writers will be eligible to enter a self-contained story or poem for a PoNC member to later illustrate. The text must fit within the confines of an 8.5 x 11" sheet of paper with 1" margins. Texts are due to the curator by midnight of January 18, 2008 . Invited writers may also sponsor up to two student works in addition to or in lieu of submitting their own pieces. As thanks for participation, each writer will receive an unframed print of the illustration specific to his/her piece. All text copyrights will remain the possession of each individual author.

PoNC members and other invited illustrators will receive their specific texts on January 22, 2008 via email. Editions of at least two must be produced; one must go to the author, and the other must be available for sale at the exhibition, with the artist receiving 50% of any sales. If more than two prints are available within any edition, then the printmaker must make this clear on any pulled print. Prints cannot exceed 8.5 x 11". It will be the responsibility of each participating printmaker to deliver to the gallery the finished prints framed alongside the text. The deadline for this delivery is 6 p.m. of March 29, 2008. Frames may not exceed 20 x 24".

All participants are invited to attend the opening reception April 4, 2008, 6 – 9 p.m. at Flanders 311. Flanders 311 is located in downtown Raleigh at the 311 West Martin Street Galleries and Studios. Participants' family and friends are also welcome.

ECU Papermaking Demo

So I know this is just starting, but maybe we should begin cataloging print shops in the state, what programs they offers, etc, both academic and otherwise. Maybe consider including letter press people? Seems like there are plenty of printers here but not a lot of places to go to print, might be nice to have those in one spot.
